Two Grand Slams Lead Mastodon Softball to Two League Wins

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team got grand slams from two different Mastodons on Thursday (March 10), leading them to a 2-0 start to Horizon League play with a pair of wins over UIC.
GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 6, UIC 3
Junior Sonia Solis went 1-for-3 from the plate, but her one hit was a grand slam. Her four RBIs led the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons past UIC 6-3.
Shaina Eyre (1-4) started in the circle and picked up the win for Purdue Fort Wayne (2-14, 1-0). The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out three. Lauren McConnell also made an impact in the circle for the Mastodons, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits to pick up her first save of the season.
Brooke Wintlend put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Alise Hale also helped out for Purdue Fort Wayne, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate with a home run in the at bat follow Wintlend's homer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mastodons got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. Purdue Fort Wayne got a grand slam from Solis off of UIC pitcher Christina Toniolo, scoring all four of the 'Dons' runs in the inning.
The Mastodons then lost some of their lead in the sixth when UIC put three runs on the board. Purdue Fort Wayne scored some insurance runs with back-to-back home runs from Wintlend and Hale, which brought the Mastodons lead to 6-3, which held for the final line. McConnell's one inning of shutout pitching led to the save.

Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons rallied from down 7-4 in the fifth inning to beat UIC thanks to a go-ahead grand slam from Brayden Lickey in the sixth.
McConnell (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Purdue Fort Wayne (3-14, 2-0). The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits.
Hale led the way offensively for the Mastodons, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBIs to pair well with Lickey's grand slam. Wintlend also chipped in, going 1-for-2 for Purdue Fort Wayne with a solo home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The afternoon game was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team led for more than two innings at a time. UIC scored first in the first, then the 'Dons answered with two in the second. Wintlend's solo homer came before Hale, who reached on a double, was brought home by Solis.
The Flames then rallied to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead before the Mastodons got back on the board in the fourth. Purdue Fort Wayne scored twice on Hale's two-run homer, which brought the Mastodons lead to 4-3.
Purdue Fort Wayne's lead had evaporated by the time the sixth inning came around and turned into a 7-4 UIC advantage. The Mastodons then got a grand slam from Lickey off UIC's Carlee Jo Clark to cash in four runs in the frame. The score remained 8-7 for the rest of the game, as Purdue Fort Wayne held on for the win. McConnell went 2.2 innings and picked up her first win of the season, the eighth of her career.
