Mastodons Pick Up Second Straight Win Over Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up a road Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association win against Lindenwood in four sets (25-15, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17) on Saturday, April 2.
With the win, the Mastodons' record improves to 15-10 overall and 6-6 in the MIVA. Lindenwood's overall record drops to 8-11 and 4-7 in the MIVA.
The 'Dons got off to an early 9-4 lead in the first set. Jon Diedrich had three kills during the run. After the Lions cut the lead to 11-7, the Mastodons finished the set on a 14-8 run. The 'Dons had eight kills during the stretch. Diedrich and Vicente Ibarra each had three kills in the run.
Neither team led by more than two points to start the second set. After the 'Dons took an 18-15 lead off an attacking error, the Lions came back and won the second set off a 10-3 run.
After a service ace gave the Lions a 12-11 lead in the third set, the 'Dons ripped off a 5-1 run to take a 17-13 lead. Ibarra had a kill and a service ace during the run. Diedrich and Rico Wardlow added kills. Despite the Mastodons run, the Lions came back to tie the set at 21-21. However, the 'Dons scored four of the final six points to win the set.
The Mastodons started the fourth set with seven kills in eight attacks. They continued their hot start and finished the set with 18 kills off 27 attack attempts and hit .630. Of those 18 kills, 10 came from Diedrich.
For the match, the 'Dons hit .393, which is the third highest team hitting percentage this season and the best in a four-set match. This is also the second time this season the 'Dons have hit over .350 against Lindenwood. The Lions hit .230.
Diedrich led the way in kills with 24, which is a season best in league play, and digs with eight. His 24 kills are his most in a league match this season. Wardlow added 11 kills and hit a team high .611. Zach Solomon notched a career high 42 assists.
The Mastodons close regular season play with a pair of home matches. The 'Dons welcome Ohio State on Thursday, April 7 (7 p.m.) and Ball State on Saturday, April 9 (7 p.m.). The Mastodons celebrate senior day prior to Saturday's match.
