Mastodons Turn Focus to Postseason After 3-1 Loss to No. 7 Ball State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped a four set match against No. 7 Ball State (33-31, 19-25, 25-22, 29-27) on Saturday, April 9 at the Gates Sports Center on the Arnie Ball Court in the regular season finale for both clubs.
With the loss, the Mastodons finish the regular season with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-8 record in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
The 'Dons are the six seed and will travel to Lebanon, Ill. to take on the three seed McKendree Bearcats on Saturday, April 16 in the MIVA Quarterfinals. The Mastodons will look to avenge a five-set loss to McKendree last season in the MIVA Tournament.
Prior to the start of the match on Saturday, the 'Dons celebrated senior day. Troy Gooch, Kade Bontrager and Cody Johnson were honored.
In the first set, the 'Dons led by as much as 16-12. Jon Diedrich and Bryce Walker combined for seven kills to start the set. Eventually, the 'Dons and Cardinals were tied at 23-23. The two teams traded points through the next 16 serves until the Cardinals clinched the first set with back to back kills to win 33-31.
After Ball State tied the second set at 7-7, the 'Dons went on a 9-1 run to take a 16-8 lead. During the stretch, Diedrich had three kills, Mitch Geiger had two, and Bontrager added one. The run proved to be too much for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals got off to a 10-6 lead early in the third set. The 'Dons responded with a 12-8 run to tie the match at 18-18. Diedrich had three kills during the stretch. Geirger had one kill and added a service ace. Despite the run, the Cardinals closed the set on a 7-4 run of their own to win the frame.
Ball State got out to another early lead. This time, the Cardinals led 10-7. The 'Dons fought their way back into the set and eventually took a 24-23 lead. The 'Dons combined for 11 team kills to during the stretch. The two teams traded the next seven points until the Cardinals won the set with a kill and a Mastodon attacking error.
For the match, the 'Dons hit .277 compared to the Cardinals' .275. The 'Dons also had 59 digs to the Cardinals 39.
Diedrich led the way with 25 kills and hit .213. Over the last three matches, Diedirch has 73 total kills and is averaging 5.46 kills per set. Zach Solomon had a career-high 52 assists. Gooch had a career-high 20 digs, which is tied for third all time for digs in a four set match. Bontrager also had a career-high 10 digs, giving Gooch and Bontrager career nights in their final match at the Gates Sports Center.
Ball State finishes the regular season 20-2 and 12-2 in league play.
