'Dons Take Down No. 15 McKendree in MIVA Quarterfinals

LEBANON, Ill. – The No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team defeated No. 3 seed McKendree in four sets (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22) in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday, April 16.
With the win, the 'Dons will travel to Chicago to take on No. 2 Loyola Chicago on Wednesday, April 20 in the MIVA Semifinals. This is the first time the 'Dons have advanced to the MIVA Semifinals since 2019.
The 'Dons improve to 16-12. McKendree, who entered the match No. 15 in the AVCA poll, concludes their season at 14-11.
Mastodon senior Kade Bontrager was all over the court on Saturday. He finished with a career-high 19 digs to go with eight kills and three blocks. The Plano, Texas native has notched 29 digs over the last eight sets (3.63 digs per set).
Vicente Ibarra hit .517 with 18 kills, his second most in a match this season. Jon Diedrich also had 18 kills. He hit .293. Freshman setter Zach Solomon led an offense which hit .317 on the night and out-hit McKendree in all four sets. Solomon totaled 45 assists, 11 digs, two kills and two aces.
Both Ibarra and Solomon were at the best in crunch time in the fourth set. While the Bearcats got out to an early 12-9 lead in the frame, the 'Dons fought back and eventually tied the set at 18-18 thanks to a 9-6 run. Neither team could earn a lead larger than one point, as the set was tied at 19, 20, 21 and 22. However, the 'Dons finished the match scoring four straight points. Solomon notched a kill, McKendree had two attacking errors, and Ibarra earned the match clinching kill.
The Mastodons won the match after taking the first two sets. The 'Dons led by as much as 15-7 in the first, only to see McKendree knot it at 20. With the set tied at 24-24, the 'Dons scored the final two points off a Bearcats service error and a Cody Johnson kill. After the Bearcats took an early 6-4 lead in the second set, the 'Dons rallied off an 11-1 run to take a 15-7 lead. In the run, Diedrich had two kills, Solomon had two service aces, and Rico Wardlow added a service ace.
McKendree hit .231 as a team. Ryan Serrano had 45 assists.
