'Dons Out-hit Flyers but Fall in Non-League Play

DAYTON, Ohio - Four Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons collected multiple hits, but the Mastodons fell to the Dayton Flyers 8-5 on Tuesday (May 10) in non-league action.
Senior Jack Lang was on base each of his five at-bats. He finished 3-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, double, single, walk and hit by pitch. His home run was his 10th of the season. He is tied for seventh in program history in single-season home runs. The last Mastodon to reach double-digits were Greg Kaiser (17) and Shane Trevino (11) in 2016.
Brian Erbe also had a home run for the 'Dons. He went 2-for-3. Cade Fitzpatrick and Dylan Stewart each had two hits. Fitzpatrick added a walk and a run scored. Stewart knocked in a pair.
The 'Dons went up 2-0 with solo shots by Lang and Erbe in the third inning. Dayton responded with three in their half to go up by one. Stewart knocked in a run in the fourth to knot it up at three.
The 3-3 tie turned into a 4-3 Purdue Fort Wayne lead in the fifth on another RBI by Stewart.
Purdue Fort Wayne lost the lead they built in the fifth, but got back on the scoreboard in the seventh trailing 5-4. Fitzpatrick crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Mastodons, tying the score at 5-5, on an RBI ground out by Garett Lake. Dayton took the lead back on a solo home run by Henry Strmecki in the seventh. They added two more in the eighth.
The Mastodons went 1-2-3 in the ninth with their last best chance to take the lead coming in the eighth. Erbe and Lang both had singles but a strikeout and a pop out ended the inning.
