Purdue Fort Wayne Picks Up Draw at Toledo
8/25/2022 9:12:00 PM | Women's Soccer
TOLEDO, Ohio - Behind a 14th minute goal from Marisa Metzger, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team drew with Toledo 1-1 on Thursday night (Aug. 25).
The Mastodons escaped a dangerous situation early in the first half, when Toledo nearly scored in close. The Mastodon defense scrambled just inches from the goal line to keep the Rockets from an early goal, helping out goalkeeper Samantha Castaneda, who had stepped off to defend an oncoming flank.
Six minutes after that defensive stop, the offense flipped the field for Metzger to score her first-career goal. She drilled a shot from 20 yards out into the top right corner, going over multiple defenders, including the outstretched Toledo goalie. This was the Mastodons' first shot of the game.
Toledo found its equalizer at the 26-minute mark when the Rockets scored on a penalty kick. The Rockets held possession for most of the first 45 minutes, but at the break the two squads were square at a goal apiece.
At minute 62, Castaneda picked up one of her more impressive saves of the evening, diving for a low strike and grabbing the ball with her fingertips.
Ten minutes later, the Mastodons had their first real offensive chance of the half. Kelsey Gallagher had a free kick after a yellow card that Mackenzie Evans had a chance to head in, but sailed wide.
Toledo had one final chance down the stretch, which saw the Rockets' shot bounce off the right post as the buzzer sounded.
Castaneda finished with eight saves in the draw in which she faced 20 shots. The 'Dons finished with four shots, one from each of Metzger, Gallagher, Morgan Reitano and Evans.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 1-1-1 while Toledo goes to 0-1-2. The Mastodons will take the field again on Sunday (Aug. 28) against Bellarmine at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
