Battle of Former League Rivals Goes to the Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A pair of first half goals were enough for the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team to defeat Western Illinois 2-1 on Friday (Sept. 2) afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The two clubs were long time Summit League rivals before the Mastodons left for the Horizon League.
The Fighting Leathernecks went up 1-0 in the 12th minute after Muazu Sagir scored. The 'Dons tied it up in the 34th minute on a goal by Seth Mahlmeister. He finished off a pass by Luke Benford.
Benford came back at 36:15 to score the game winning goal. He took a pass from freshman Abe Arellano that Arellano sent from the left side to Benford on the right side.
The 'Dons out-shot the Leathernecks 14-11. Corner kicks were even at five.
Adam Hunt had five saves for the 'Dons to pick up his first career victory.
Western Illinois falls to 0-2-0. The Mastodons are now 1-1-1. The 'Dons host Eastern Illinois on Sunday (Sept. 4) in a 3 p.m. start at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
