Mastodons Can’t Find the Equalizer in 1-0 Loss to EIU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne led 17-6 in total shots on Sunday (Sept. 4) at the Hefner Soccer Complex but ultimately fell 1-0 to Eastern Illinois.
The Mastodons also held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks which helped result in a 10-1 advantage in shots in the second half.
Purdue Fort Wayne's Marco Valencia hit the crossbar in the 80th minute as the 'Dons were looking to tie it up. It started a stretch of six shots in the final 10 minutes that never found the back of the net.
The only goal of the game came in the 15th minute. Julian Smith snuck it just inside the right post off a pass from Sam Eccles. EIU made it hold up.
Luke Benford finished with four shots for the 'Dons.
Danny Salazar had one save as the 'Dons surrendered only two shots on goal in the game.
EIU improves to 1-2-1. The Mastodons fall to 1-2-1. Purdue Fort Wayne opens league play on Saturday (Sept 10) at 1 p.m. against Oakland.
