Mastodons Earn Draw with League Favorite Oakland 1-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The left foot of Luke Benford found the back of the net in the 76th minute to give Purdue Fort Wayne a 1-1 tie with Oakland on Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon.
The 'Dons controlled the first half of the game, out-shooting Oakland 9-3 in the first 45 minutes and recording the half's only two shots on goal. One of which came on a header by Abe Arellano that required a diving save by Oakland goalkeeper Michael Sly Jr.
The first 20 or so minutes of the second half was flipped, with Oakland controlling the majority of the pace of play. The Golden Grizzlies went up 1-0 on a goal by Owen Smith, assisted by Dawsun Schrum. Smith found the left side of the net on his shot.
The game flipped again, however, and the 'Dons recorded the final eight shots of the contest. The equalizer came in the 76th minute. Benford's strike from about 20 yards out was deflected by an Oakland defender into the top right of the goal, despite Sly's best efforts to reach for it. Keith Larson received an assist on the goal.
The Mastodons finished with a 20-8 edge in shots, including 6-2 in shots on goal. Purdue Fort Wayne also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
While the series with Oakland goes back to 1982 and includes shared time in the Summit League, positive results have been far and few between against the Golden Grizzlies. The draw is only the second positive result in 22 tries for the 'Dons, the other being a win in 2012.
Oakland won the league title last season and was picked to win it again this season.
Purdue Fort Wayne is now 1-2-2 (0-0-1 Horizon League). Oakland is now 0-4-1 (0-0-1 Horizon League).
The 'Dons are back in action on Wednesday against Western Michigan. It will be the annual Party at the Pitch with food trucks, games and other fun.
