Offense Rolls For Mastodon MVB to Beat Harvard

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team used a powerful offensive attack to overwhelm Harvard on Saturday (Jan. 21) 25-23, 25-23, 25-19.
The Mastodons hit .326 for the match, improving as the night went on. After a .242 first set, the 'Dons hit .324 and .440 in the second and third sets.
Jon Diedrich continued his monster weekend with 20 kills on a .471 hitting percentage. For the week, he averaged 5.00 kills per set with a .509 hitting clip. Mark Frazier joined Diedrich on the successful pin attack, registering 14 kills for the 'Dons.
Purdue Fort Wayne led in set one 11-6 after going on a 5-1 run. Diedrich had a kill and an ace and Frazier had two kills in this run. Bryce Walker had a solo block to put the 'Dons up 22-16 before Harvard rattled off 7-of-9 to bring it within one. This included holding off a pair of Mastodon set points. Diedrich got a kill on an out-of-system assist from Frazier to end the set.
After trailing 2-1, Harvard did not trail again 24-23. The 'Dons were down 23-23, then went to their best player and got two kills from Diedrich. Emmanuel Jurineack got a kill on an overpass on set point to push the 'Dons up 2-0.
The Mastodons went up 6-1 in the final set of the night, but never fully put Harvard away until late. The Crimson got within two at 19-17 before the 'Dons won six of the last eight points. Diedrich had three kills in this final stretch.
Noah Melendez had six digs to lead the 'Dons' defensive efforts. Frazier and Diedrich had six each. Jurineack had five kills with a .500 hitting rate.
Harvard was led by 11 kills from Kade McGovern and 10 kills from Zach Berty.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 4-1 and knocks Harvard down to 2-2. The Mastodons are back in action next week on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27-28) when they host Sacred Heart and Queens.
