Mastodons Play Host to Sacred Heart and Queens

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team will look to extend its three-game winning streak with a pair of matches this weekend. Sacred Heart and future MIVA member Queens will visit the Gates Sports Center on Friday (Jan. 27) and Saturday (Jan. 28).

Know Your Foes
• Sacred Heart is 1-2 this season with losses to Harvard and at NJIT. The Pioneers are coming off a 3-2 win over Stevens. Patrick Mucherino, Ife Loverton, Carlos Santa Cruz and Carter Lyons are all averaging between two and three kills per set for SHU. Tyler Kwinta is dishing out 9.88 assists per set to lead the Pioneers to a .215 hitting percentage.
• Queens is 1-4 this season and is coming off a home loss to No. 1 Hawaii in straight sets. The Royals' one win this season came in three-set fashion over Lees-McRae. They also went to five sets with Merrimack, which won that match by the minimum. Queens is led by Daniel Leitao and Ananias Hayes who are both averaging over 2.00 kills per set.

• Purdue Fort Wayne has a 10-2 all-time record against Sacred Heart and have won the last four. The series goes back to 2011. Last season when these two teams met, Jon Diedrich had 16 kills and 10 digs and Bryce Walker had 10 kills with a .444 hitting clip.
• The Mastodons and Royals have met just twice, with Purdue Fort Wayne owning both wins in the series. They met in 2019 and 2020. The season opener in 2020 featured a 28-kill effort from Jon Diedrich.

The MIVA announced on August 15, 2022 that Queens will be its newest conference member. The Royals will officially be the ninth member of the MIVA, and sixth Division I program in the conference, on July 1, 2023.
