Hoops Is Back! 'Dons Open 2023-24 Season at Michigan on Monday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball season is upon us. The Mastodons will open the 2023-24 campaign at Michigan on Monday (Nov. 6) at 7 p.m.

Know Your Foe
Michigan was 23-10 and 11-7 in the Big Ten last season and returns two of its five best scorers from a year ago: Laila Phelia (16.7 PPG) and Cameron Williams (6.4 PPG). The Wolverines fell to eventual national champion LSU in the Round of 32 last season. Phelia had 20 points in that game. Michigan will host fellow Horizon League member Oakland on November 14.

Purdue Fort Wayne and Michigan have met just once in the history of the rivalry, a game on December 16, 2017. Michigan won the game 77-45, led by 21 points from three-time All-America Honorable Mention Katelynn Flaherty. Jaelencia Williams had 13 points in the post for the 'Dons.
'Dons Against the B1G
The Mastodons are 1-28 against the Big Ten in program history, with the one win coming over No. 21 Michigan State in 2013, which was the first win over a top-25 team in program history. In recent history, the 'Dons played two Big Ten teams a year ago (at Michigan State and vs. No. 15 Maryland). The 'Dons had eight blocks at Michigan State, the most against a Power 5 program in school history, and held MSU to 11.1 percent from the 3-point line, the Spartans' lowest 3-point shooting in five years. The 'Dons hosted Maryland last year, pitting Shayla Sellers against her sister Shyanne. Shyanne slowed down her older sister, Shayla, but Amellia Bromenschenkel had a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds, the program's first double-double against a Power Five team.

Purdue Fort Wayne announced that it will take a foreign tour over the summer of 2024. The Mastodons will travel to Italy for nine days, playing two games against local talent and sightseeing various locales in Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre and Como.
Chasing 1,000
The Mastodons have two players that are looking to reach 1,000 points in their careers. Shayla Sellers has 917 and Amellia Bromenschenkel has 627. Bromenschenkel scored 411 points last year.
Updating The Record Books
Last season, the 'Dons made the second-most 3-pointers in program history with 253 makes. They also scored the 10th-most points in Mastodon history with 2,067.
That's a Long Name!
Amellia Bromenschenkel ties for the longest name in the Horizon League with 21 letters in her name. The only other in the league with 21 letters is Robert Morris' Stephanie Theodossakos.
Returning Production
The Mastodons returned 77.4 percent of minutes and 78.0 percent of scoring from 2022-23 for this season.
How About Emmerson?
Audra Emmerson shot 45.8 percent from 3-point range from January 4-March 6, a mark of 38-of-83 over 19 games.
Smarty-Pants!
The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team ranked 19th in the nation in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 last season. They recorded a 3.596 GPA in the 2022-23 season. They had the highest GPA of all Division I women's basketball programs in Indiana.
On A Roll! The Honor Roll!
The Mastodons had eight players on last year's team make the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll. Of those players, Amellia Bromenschenkel, Audra Emmerson, Jazzlyn Linbo, Ryin Ott and Shayla Sellers are back for 2023-24. They were among the 108 Mastodon student-athletes to qualify for the honor roll.

Purdue Fort Wayne has three freshmen on its roster for 2023-24: Konstantina Mantziori, Erin Woodson and Renna Schwieterman. Mantziori is from Athens, Greece and played her high school ball at Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She averaged 10.9 points and 7.9 assists in her senior season. Woodson was a 2,000-point scorer at Saint Gertrude High School in Richmond, Virginia. Schwieterman was an All-State selection as a local product at Jay County High School in Portland, Indiana.
