Shayla Sellers Hits 1,000 Career Points as 'Dons Improve to 6-2
12/3/2023 4:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Shayla Sellers became the 21st Mastodon in Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point mark on Sunday (Dec. 3). Needing six to reach the milestone, Sellers scored nine as she helped the Mastodons beat Wright State 71-60.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 6-2 and 2-0 to start the Horizon League. This is the program's best start through eight games in the Division I era.
In a matchup of two nationally top-30 3-point shooting teams, both teams struggled finding success from beyond the arc. Both hit five triples, with Wright State shooting 20 percent and the Mastodons shooting 25 percent. Purdue Fort Wayne found other ways to win, scoring 38 points in the paint and 20 points off turnovers. They found 16 points at the charity stripe as well. The Mastodons forced the Raiders into 19 turnovers.
Sixty points is the second-fewest points Wright State has scored this season. The only game with fewer was the Raiders' 99-55 loss at Michigan State.
Wright State came out hot, hitting four of their five triples in the first quarter. The 'Dons held them to just 1-of-17 over the final 30 minutes. After the Raiders led 24-18 through one quarter, the Mastodons out-scored them 53-36 the rest of the way.
The Mastodons took the lead for good with 4:44 left in the second quarter when Destinee Marshall drove in off a screen from Sydney Graber to hit a mid-range floater. Wright State hung around for about 10 more minutes until the Mastodons went on an 8-0 run in a three-minute stretch to go up 13. This came shortly after a 7-0 run that was sparked by Sellers recording her 1,000th point. She faked out her defender in the paint and got a four-footer to fall.
The Raiders responded with an 8-0 run of their own to bring it back within three midway through the fourth quarter. Up four, Sellers had the biggest bucket of the game, collecting an offensive rebound off a miss from Renna Schwieterman and dropped in a layup to push the lead to six. Schwieterman scored four of the team's final six points to help solidify the win. She finished with a team-high 14 points and a career-high six boards.
Ryin Ott pitched in 12 points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench. Marshall had 10 points. Sellers had nine points and seven rebounds while Amellia Bromenschenkel had nine points and eight boards. Graber had six points and five boards off the bench.
Purdue Fort Wayne was 20-of-40 (50 percent) inside the arc.
There were 10 ties and four lead changes.
Wright State falls to 5-3, 1-1.
The Mastodons will be back on Wednesday (Dec. 6) at former GLVC rival Bellarmine at 6:30 p.m.
