Service Line Proves Friendly as Mastodons Beat Maryville

ST. LOUIS - Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball won its eighth-straight match on Wednesday night (Feb. 8), taking down Maryville 25-17, 25-19, 25-17.
The Mastodons had a season-high 10 aces, led in large part to its go-to offensive options, Jon Diedrich and Bryce Walker. Diedrich tied his career-high with four aces and Walker had five.
The Mastodons went on a 4-0 run to go up 7-3 early in set one. Mark Frazier had two of his nine kills in that run. After Maryville evened up the set, Walker went on a 3-0 run himself. He had a kill then three aces in a row to put the 'Dons up 15-11. Sergio Carrillo and Carlos Mercado both had aces from that point, including the set point.
Maryville led 9-8 in set two before the Mastodons rattled off 7-of-8. Jon Diedrich had a pair of aces in this stretch. This put the 'Dons up for good.
The 'Dons emptied the bench in set three, with Mercado and Zach Solomon starting their first sets of 2023, and adding Axel Melendez Watts, Davey Singer and Hunter Clasen in the rotation. Walker had back-to-back aces to put the 'Dons up 10-5 in the final set, giving the 'Dons enough of a lead to nurse the rest of the way. The 'Dons hit .444 in the final frame.
Purdue Fort Wayne hit .353 as a team (36-12-68). This is the sixth time this season that the Mastodons have hit over .300. Walker finished with seven kills on 10 attempts, five blocks, five aces and three digs. Diedrich had a match-high 10 kills.
Maryville's Caden Klingbiel had a team-high nine kills with a .300 hitting percentage.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 9-1 while Maryville falls to 2-7. The Mastodons open MIVA play on Friday (Feb. 10) at Lindenwood. First serve is set for 8 p.m.
