Mastodons Hand No. 9 Loyola Chicago First MIVA Loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne broke No. 9 Loyola Chicago's 10-match win streak and handed the Ramblers their first MIVA loss of the season on Saturday (March 18) evening on Arnie Ball Court. The Mastodons won 3-2 (25-18, 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 15-12).
It seemed the 'Dons were in danger of suffering the second five-set loss of the season to the Ramblers when Loyola took an 8-5 lead in set five. Then things changed. The 'Dons went on a 8-1 run and went up 13-9. The key points came on three consecutive blocks for the 'Dons. First it was a solo block by Sergio Carrillo that bounced off the Cole Schlothauer's head all the way out of bounds behind the Mastodon end line. It put the 'Dons up 10-9. Carrillo partnered with Bryce Walker for a block to go up 11-9. Then Walker teamed with Jon Diedrich to give the Mastodons a 12-9 lead. Diedrich followed with his 19th kill of the match to put the 'Dons up 13-9 and all but end the match.
The match was tight in nearly every set. Diedrich was the difference in the first set, recording seven of his 19 kills in the frame. In the second set, each team had a set point opportunity before the 'Dons took advantage of their second game point on a block by Diedrich and Walker. It came after back-to-back kills by Walker.
The third set was tied at 22 before Loyola finished the frame by scoring three of the final four points. There were 12 ties and four lead changes in the fourth set, but the Ramblers eventually pulled away by scoring five of the last six.
Diedrich led the 'Dons with a team-high 19 kills. Carrillo totaled 40 assists with a team-high 11 digs. Walker was fantastic on both sides of the ball, as he hit .520 with 14 kills and had a career-high nine blocks.
The 'Dons limited Loyola as a team to .216 hitting. MIVA Preseason Player of the Year Parker Van Buren recorded 19 kills for Loyola, but the 'Dons held him to a .167 attack percentage.
Purdue Fort Wayne won the service battle, leading in aces 7-3 while committing two fewer service errors. The 'Dons also blocked Loyola 16 times, the second-most for Purdue Fort Wayne this season. It was the most that any team has blocked the Ramblers this season. The Mastodons also held LUC to its second-worse offensive performance of the year.
The Mastodons improve to 13-9 and 4-4 in the MIVA after their first win over a ranked team this season. Loyola falls to 17-3, but still owns first place in the MIVA with an 8-1 conference record. The Mastodons will welcome 6-10 (1-8) McKendree to the Gates Sports Center next Thursday (March 23) for a 7 p.m. contest.
