FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Mark Frazier set career-highs in kills (19) and digs (13) to help Purdue Fort Wayne win a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match over McKendree 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 24-26, 15-13) on Thursday (March 23) evening on Arnie Ball Court.
Frazier hit .304 on his way to a match-high 19 kills. He also had four blocks and an ace. He was one of three 'Dons with double-digit kills. Jon Diedrich added 14 kills and six blocks. Carlos Mercado finished with 11 kills. Noah Melendez added 11 digs.
At the media timeout of the first set, the 'Dons led McKendree 15-9 and was out-hitting them .455 to -.062. McKendree rallied all the way back to lead 22-21 and 23-22. But the scoreboard would advance no higher than 23 for the Bearcats. A service error, Diedrich kill and an attack error gave the 'Dons the final three points they would need. The Diedrich kill was the result of the longest rally of the match.
Set two was tied at 18 before the 'Dons closed the frame on a 7-1 run. Bryce Walker had back-to-back blocks for points 24 and 25.
Set three was McKendree's from the jump, and set four was similar too, until the 'Dons went on a 6-1 run to tie the score at 24. It wasn't enough as the Bearcats forced a fifth set.
The visitors led 4-1 in set five before the 'Dons tied it at five. McKendree took the lead back 8-6 at the switch. Back-to-back Frazier kills tied it at nine. A Mastodon block forced a McKendree timeout after the 'Dons took their first lead of the frame at 10-9. The pause didn't influence the 'Dons. They just kept on scoring, going up 12-9. The 'Dons eventually won it on a Diedrich kill. He was at his best in the final set, recording five error-less kills in the deciding stanza. As a team the 'Dons hit .348 (10-2-23) in the fifth.
Bryce Wetjen recorded a team-high 18 kills for the Bearcats.
The 'Dons improve to 14-9 (5-4 MIVA). McKendree falls to 6-11 (1-9 MIVA). The 'Dons continue MIVA play on Saturday with a trip to Romeoville, Illinois to play Lewis.
