YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown State had a pair of come-from-behind wins over Purdue Fort Wayne softball on Tuesday (March 21).
GAME 1 - Youngstown State 4, Purdue Fort Wayne 3
Sonia Solis tied her career-high as a Mastodon with three hits in the Horizon League opener. She singled to the shortstop in the second inning, then singled through the left side in the third and the fifth. In the third inning, she was responsible for bringing Taylor Warne home to start the scoring. She was then brought home herself on a single from Alanah Jones. This put the Mastodons up 3-0 on the home Penguins.
Jones allowed just three hits in the first four innings. YSU got its first runs in the fifth when the Penguins got a single and a home run to start the frame.
While the 'Dons got out of the inning with the lead, the Penguins had the momentum push their way. They evened the score at 3-3 in the sixth with a pair of singles.
Purdue Fort Wayne was held without a baserunner in the top of the seventh, then Youngstown State scored the walk off run. Jones struck out seventh batter of the day with the bases loaded, but then had a single find its way through the defense to get the win.
Jones took the loss to fall to 3-8. Bree Kohler got the win in 2.0 innings of work to move to 2-1.
GAME 2 - Youngstown State 7, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
It was two three-run innings that were the difference in game two.
The Mastodons put runners in scoring position early in the first inning, then took advantage of a fielder's choice and a wild pitch to go up 2-0 before the Penguins had a chance to take an at-bat.
The Penguins scored their first in the bottom of the first inning, then scored three in each of the second and third innings.
From there, the Mastodons kept the Penguins off the board in large part to Gracie Brinkerhoff. She pitched 2.1 innings and gave up just one hit.
Purdue Fort Wayne had a chance to respond in the top of the seventh when the 'Dons loaded the bases. Tori Countryman singled to left, Grace Hollopeter did the same, then Brooke Lickey walked to put the Penguins in a jam. This was all the Mastodons could muster, however, and YSU held the 'Dons without a run.
Sophie Howell threw all 7.0 innings to get the win to move to 4-5. Alyson Quinlan fell to 1-6.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 5-18, 0-2 Horizon League, while Youngstown State improves to 9-13, 2-0. The Mastodons will return home to play in a midweek non-league game against Valparaiso on Wednesday of next week (March 29).
