ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team wrapped up the 2023 campaign with a split at Oakland, which won the Horizon League regular season championship.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished the year at 17-32, marking the most wins for the program since 2018.
GAME 1: Oakland 4, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
The Mastodons got seven hits against the reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Year, Sydney Campbell. The 'Dons out-hit the Golden Grizzlies 7-6.
Taryn Jenkins had one of her better games of the season, notching three hits to tie her career-best, which she has done five times. She also had the Mastodons' only RBI of the contest, bringing home Brooke Lickey in the fifth inning.
Oakland did its damage with a pair of two-run innings in the third and fifth. The Golden Grizzlies had three triples coming from their first three batters in the lineup.
The Mastodons left seven runners on base, including three in scoring position. The 'Dons had bases loaded in the sixth with the go-ahead run at the plate, but Oakland got out of the jam.
Campbell pitched the whole game, but only struck out one 'Don. She got the win to move to 17-6. Alanah Jones threw 4.1 innings and struck out three and was the pitcher of record. Gracie Brinkerhoff threw 1.2 innings of relief with three K's.
GAME 2: Purdue Fort Wayne 8, Oakland 1
Purdue Fort Wayne finished the season with its 17th win of the year thanks to eight runs. It was the most for the 'Dons in nearly a month.
Oakland scored its only run of the game in the first inning, then the 'Dons got the bats going throughout the rest of the game. The Mastodons racked up 12 hits, their most in their last 15 outings.
Jenkins led off the third inning with a double then advanced to third on a single from Grace Hollopeter. Then Sonia Solis doubled to center field to score both Jenkins and Hollopeter and give the Mastodons the lead they did not relinquish.
The next time through the lineup, Hollopeter drew a walk then went around to third when Solis reached on an error. Tori Countryman singled to load the bases for Brayden Lickey, who delivered with a double. This scored two more runs, this time, Hollopeter and Solis.
An inning later in the sixth, Solis hit a solo home run to score the 'Dons' fifth run of the game. Epiphany Hang and Countryman got on with singles to set up Lickey with another RBI opportunity. Her bat was timely, setting up for a double to left center to score both baserunners. In the seventh, Bailey Manos hit a sac fly to score Jenkins and put the cherry on top of the game.
Lickey finished with four RBIs, which tied her career-best.
Brinkerhoff picked up the win in her fourth complete game of the season. She improved to 7-9. Mia Konyvka fell to 0-8 in 2.1 innings.
Purdue Fort Wayne's season comes to a close. Oakland will move on to play in the Horizon League Championship as the No. 1 seed.
