Fujioka's Goal Lifts 'Dons Over Chicago State
9/12/2023 6:58:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Soshi Fujioka had the lone goal of Tuesday (Sept. 12) night's match between Purdue Fort Wayne and Chicago State at the Hefner Soccer Complex. As the ball came into the box, a Chicago State defender attempted to clear the ball away, but Fujioka managed to corral the ball and put it on goal.
Shots on goal were even at two through 70 minutes. Danny Salazar made both saves for the Mastodons while Chicago State's Joseph Deitering did the same.
Fujioka had three shots on goal in the match, including his game winning goal. Seth Mahlmeister and Marco Valencia each had a shot on goal as well, but were turned away. Mahlmeister's came on a free kick from Luke Morrell, but he wasn't able to slot it past the Chicago State keeper.
It's the first goal of the season for Fujioka. The senior from Tokyo is the sixth different goal scorer for the 'Dons so far this season. In fact, Purdue Fort Wayne has had six goal this season, all from different players.
Tuesday's shutout is the second straight shutout for the 'Dons after blanking Milwaukee 3-0 on Saturday.
The Mastodons improve to 2-2-1 this season and are undefeated in their last three matches. Chicago State falls to 2-3-1. Purdue Fort Wayne travels to Green Bay on Saturday (Sept. 16) at 7 p.m. for their second Horizon League match.
