Mastodons Fall to NJIT in Heartbreaking Five-Setter

NEWARK, N.J. - Despite a late lead in set four, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell to NJIT 3-2 (24-26, 23-25, 25-14, 27-25, 15-7) on Saturday night (Jan. 13).
The Mastodons were up 22-16 in set four with a 2-1 set advantage before NJIT came roaring back. The Highlanders went on a 6-0 run to tie it up at 22, then took four of the final five points of the set to force a fifth. From there, the home team was perfect in the final set, registering 11 kills on 11 attempts.
In set one, the Highlanders outhit the Mastodons .310-.167, but the 'Dons were on the receiving end of several errors that allowed them to take the first set. In the first two sets alone, NJIT had 16 of their 24 service errors. In set two, the 'Dons hit .500 with just two attack errors.
NJIT went on a 9-0 run in set three to take full control. In set four, the 'Dons returned to their bread and butter, finding Jon Diedrich for seven kills.
Diedrich finished with a team-high 16 kills and five blocks. Mark Frazier chipped in 14 and Bryce Walker added nine. Wilmer Hernandez had 10 digs. Between Walker and Kaden Fosdick, the two middle blockers combined for 13 kills on .591 hitting.
NJIT was led by 26 kills from Alessandro Negri, who hit .469. Andrew Fedmasu had 12 kills on 13 errorless swings.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-1. NJIT improves to 2-3. The Mastodons will be back in action next week when Maryville comes to the Gates Sports Center for a Friday night (Jan. 19) match.
