Purdue Fort Wayne MVB Dominates Maryville

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team hit over .400 for the third time this season in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) rout of Maryville on Friday night (Jan. 19) on the Arnie Ball Court.
Jon Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills as he has every match this season. He was one of two Mastodons that finished in double-figures as Diedrich finished with 13 kills and Mark Frazier added 10. The pair combined for nine kills in the opening set and Frazier delivered the ace to clinch the set for the 'Dons. Compared to the rest of the match, the Mastodons hit a pedestrian .310 in the opening frame.
Purdue Fort Wayne hit .591 in the second set with 16 kills on 22 attacks. The 'Dons' sharp attack helped them jump out to a 12-4 lead to start the set. Shortly after that, the 'Dons claimed five points in a row when three straight Maryville errors were followed by a kill and ace from Diedrich.
The 'Dons had 14 kills with just one error in the third set for a .419 hitting percentage. Maryville tied the score late in the set at 20-20 and the two sides stayed knotted until the 'Dons won the final three points of the set. Axel Melendez Watts broke the tie with his ninth kill, Emmanuel Jurineack and Diedrich teamed up for a block, and Diedrich fittingly delivered the final blow of the match. Andrej Polomac assisted on 36 kills and came just one dig shy of a double-double with nine. The 'Dons had only eight attacking errors in the match, their lowest total since January 12, 2019 against Queens when they had seven. Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 4-1 with the win while Maryville falls to 2-1. The 'Dons turn their attention to No. 3 Hawaii for two matches on Thursday (Jan. 25) and Friday (Jan. 26). with the 2023 national runners-up.
