'Dons Fall to No. 4 Hawaii in Four Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 34-32, 25-19) to No. 4 Hawai'i on Thursday (Jan. 25) evening on the Arnie Ball Court.
Mark Frazier had a match-high 14 kills with three blocks and two digs for the 'Dons. Jon Diedrich added eight kills. Hawai'i out-hit the 'Dons .355 to .157 with Spyros Chakas putting down 12 kills with four digs for the Rainbow Warriors.
The 'Dons won a hard-fought set one. After the score was tied at 19, Axel Melendez Watts and Bryce Walker had kills in a four-point stretch to go up 22-21. From there, Walker and Andrej Polomac combined for a massive block, then the 'Dons forced the Rainbow Warriors into an attacking error. After a Mastodon service error, Diedrich blocked Hawai'i's Louis Sakanoko to take the opening frame. The 'Dons hit .393 while holding Hawai'i to .115 in set one.
Hawai'i controlled set two to even the match after doubling up the 'Dons 14-7. Mark Frazier had an ace to bring it back within four, but the Rainbow Warriors pulled away from there. The two teams stayed close through most of the third set. Hawai'i won two points in a row to gain an 18-16 advantage, but Frazier hit his third kill of the set to keep close. The Rainbow Warriors took five of the next six points and went on to win 25-21.
Frazier led the 'Dons with three kills in the fourth set but Hawai'i hit .474 in the final set to take the match. Wilmer Hernandez had six digs to lead the Mastodons' defensive efforts.
Hawai'i improves to 4-1. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-2. The two teams will rematch on Friday night (Jan. 26).
