CLEVELAND - Jazzlyn Linbo had a career-high 20 points and a season-high 12 rebounds, but Purdue Fort Wayne dropped a women's basketball contest at Cleveland State 68-56 on Saturday (Jan. 13).
Amellia Bromenschenkel also contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. This was the first game to have two Mastodon double-doubles since November 15, 2021, when Shayla Sellers and Ryin Ott did against UIC.
The Mastodons went toe-to-toe with the 2023 Horizon League champions until late in the contest when the lead ballooned with free throws. It was a three-point game after a 12-1 run that sandwiched the break between the third and fourth quarters. Sellers hit a pair of triples, Linbo hit two free throws and Ott and Bromenschenkel each had a layup. The 'Dons were 4-for-7 in this stretch while holding Cleveland State to 0-for-4.
The Viking lead crept back up to eight before the 'Dons responded with a 6-2 stretch behind four points from Linbo and two from Bromenschenkel. This brought it back to four before the Vikings pushed it back out again.
Earlier on in the game, a pair of freshmen hit a pair of final-possession 3-pointers in the first and second quarters. In the first, Renna Schwieterman buried one from 35 feet as time expired. Ten minutes later, Erin Woodson drained a triple 34 seconds before halftime.
The Mastodons outrebounded Cleveland State 40-37, primarily on the shoulders of three players. Linbo (12) Bromenschenkel (11) and Sellers (7) were the only 'Dons with more than two boards.
Cleveland State was led by its two-headed monster of Colbi Maples (29 points, seven assists) and Mickayla Perdue (19 points).
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 11-7 and 5-3 in the Horizon League. Cleveland State improves to 15-3 and 6-1 in the league. The Mastodons will be back in action on Thursday (Jan. 18) when they visit Youngstown State.
