CLEVELAND – Rasheed Bello finished with a team-high 20 points but it wasn't enough to lift the Mastodons to victory on Saturday (Jan. 20) as Purdue Fort Wayne fell at Cleveland State 75-68.
Bello added four boards and six assists to his 20 points. Anthony Roberts joined Bello in double figures with 16 points and six rebounds.
The 'Dons finished the game shooting 40.7 percent but Cleveland State shot better at 51.8 percent. Similarly from range, Purdue Fort Wayne shot 34.8 percent while CSU made 11-of-22 to shoot 50 percent. The 'Dons made the most of their free throws in sinking 16-of-18 for their season-high percentage of 88.9.
Jalen Jackson hit two free throws with four minutes to play and tied the score at 66. After collecting a CSU miss, the 'Dons had a chance to take the lead, but lost the ball and Tae Williams' layup at the other end gave the Vikings a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The two sides spent almost the same amount of time in the lead. Cleveland State led by 21-16 after the first ten minutes of the game, but the 'Dons came back to lead by two at halftime. In the second half, the 'Dons led by 15 with 11:14 to play, but couldn't fend off a CSU comeback that saw Drew Lowder score 15 of his game-high 23 points.
Cleveland State improves to 12-8 (5-4 Horizon League) while the 'Dons fall to 13-7 (4-5 Horizon League).
The 'Dons are back in action on Thursday (Jan. 25) at Northern Kentucky on ESPNU.
