CLEVELAND - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dominated Cleveland State 26-24, 25-12, 25-14 on Friday night (Oct. 18).
The Mastodon attack was balanced, but it was the defense that stifled the Vikings on their home floor. The 'Dons held CSU to an .085 hitting percentage by digging 56 attempts and blocking four.
LonDynn Betts had 21 of the team's 56 digs. Panna Ratkai and Riley Rosneck paced the Mastodon offense with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Rosneck was very efficient with a .421 hitting percentage.
The opening set was as close as it was all not, but it did not start that way. Nicole Jones got an ace then opening up a 7-0 run to start things. The Vikings eventually led 13-10. Later on, the 'Dons had a 4-0 run that featured kills from Iris Riegel and Rosneck, another ace from Jones and a block from Abby Stratford and Jena Medearis. CSU turned away a pair of set points, but Mya Plemons got a kill and Ratkai got an ace to go up 1-0.
The Vikings were within three at 15-12 in set two, but that's all the home team would score. The Mastodons exploded for a 10-0 run behind Meg Berkland's service that included three aces for the freshman.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 9-2 lead to start set three. The opening run included three aces and two from Ratkai. Later on, a 4-0 run for the 'Dons including a block from Ratkai and Plemons and a kill from Ratkai put the visitors up 10 and fully in control of the match.
The Mastodons out-served the Vikings, finishing with a 10-4 advantage in aces.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 12-9, 5-3 Horizon League while Cleveland State falls to 13-6, 4-4. These two teams will meet again tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 19) at 2 p.m.
