LEXINGTON, Ky. - Justin Hicks of the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team is seeking his first individual title as a collegian. The freshman is tied for second after a round of 75 and an incomplete second round on Monday (Oct. 7) at the Cullan Brown Collegiate.
The opening day of the event was cut short due to darkness and will be resumed on Tuesday (Oct. 8) at 9 a.m.
Hicks shot a 4-over 75 in the morning round, finding birdies on holes six and 11, both par-4s. These both came after a stretch of six pars from 18 to five. Later in the day, the birdie putts continued in a more frequent fashion. He birdied 18 and two, then had a stretch of three birdies in four holes from six to nine. That moved him to 1-under for the round and he finished with three pars before the round was called.
Playing from the No. 3 spot, AJ Agnew shot 75 in round one and had one hole left in the second. In the morning, his 75 featured two birdies and 12 pars. It included a stretch of four pars in a row on the front and five on the back. After making the turn, he went to 4-under thanks to four birdies in his first six holes. He got them to fall on 18, one, three and four. After a couple of bogeys, he birdied the seventh. He is tied for 12th with 19 holes to go.
Nick Holder and Nick Bellush are tied for 46th at 11-over. Holder had nothing worse than a bogey in round one. He had four birdies on the back nine for his opening round of 75. He completed round two before the darkness set in, carding a 78. He started the second round with six pars, then birdied hole 12 later on.
Bellush started his day with a birdie on 18, then had another on hole five. A few bogeys set him back to 5-over, but he finished the round with four pars in his final five holes. In round two, Bellush was even on the front nine thanks to two birdies on three and nine immediately following bogeys on two and eight. He wrapped his day with a birdie on 16 and a par on 17. Bellush finished with 77-77-154.
Brock Reschly finished his day with an 88-77-165. In round one, he had seven pars. In the afternoon, he had 13 pars, including seven in a row to finish the day.
As a team, the Mastodons are in fourth at 30-over. Kennesaw State is leading the pack at +16.
