'Dons Wrap Up First Tournament of 2024

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Purdue Fort Wayne softball dropped a pair of games on the final day of the Stinger Classic on Saturday (Feb. 10).
GAME 1 - Alabama State 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
Epiphany Hang and Brayden Lickey both had three hits in the Mastodons third game of the Stinger Classic, but the Mastodons fell to the host Alabama Hornets 5-2.
The Mastodons finished with 10 hits, one more than the Hornets. After Hang and Lickey's three, Bailey Manos, Aglaia Rudd, McKenna Minton and Alanah Jones each had one hit.
Purdue Fort Wayne got on the board first in the second inning. Lickey doubled, then advanced to third after Jones singled to right field. Brooke Lickey brought her sister home on a sacrifice fly.
Alabama State took the lead in the third after a sequence of a single, triple and ground out. The 'Dons tied it back up in the following inning when Minton got into scoring position with a double. Brayden Lickey singled up the middle to bring Minton home.
The Hornets scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, then added two more for insurance in the sixth.
Jones threw all 6.0 innings but suffered the loss. Alabama State split up the pitching duties. Ashley Pye got the win and Ana Richiez got a save. Olivia Brown threw 3.0 from the start.
Alabama State improves to 1-2.
GAME 2 - Austin Peay 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
The Mastodons had six hits in their game against Austin Peay, but fell 6-0 in the nightcap.
Austin Peay scored the eventual game-winning run in the third inning after a pair of singles. In the bottom of the same inning, the Mastodons had two hits come from Manos and Rudd. Rudd's double was the only extra base hit for the 'Dons.
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth, when Austin Peay scored five more.
In the seventh, the Lickey sisters each had a single.
Gracie Brinkerhoff took the loss in 5.0 innings of work. Freshman Kayla Roberts threw 2.0 innings of relief. Samantha Miener earned the win in 5.0 innings pitched.
Austin Peay improves to 4-0. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 1-3. The Mastodons will be back in action next week when they compete in UTEP's tournament.
