ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Kasey Lilly played some of the best golf in the field on Monday (Feb. 19) in the opening day of the World Golf Village Collegiate.
The second round was suspended due to darkness, approximately two holes prior to completion. It will be finished on Tuesday (Feb. 20) prior to the start of the final round of play.
Lilly shot 68 and is in second place. In his opening round of 68, he started even through his first nine holes. He had a birdie on seven and a bogey on eight. From there, he went on a tear, birdieing four of the next six holes, including three straight. He finished the morning round with three pars. After making the turn, Lilly parred his starting hole and birdied the second. He parred his next nine before a bogey on 15, but he made up for it with a birdie on 18 for an even back nine.
Freshman AJ Agnew finished day one in 35th place with a 76. In round one, he started with four pars before sandwiching two birdies with two bogeys from 11-14. He had seven pars over his next 10 holes. The start of the afternoon round looked very similar, as the first seven holes had the same scores. From there, however, Agnew rattled off a stretch of eight holes in which he was even. Through his first 15 holes of round two, he moved up 26 spots on the leaderboard.
From the No. 3 spot, Burke Pitz shot 76. His opening round featured birdies on 2, 12, and 18 and pars on 11 other holes. In the afternoon, he was more consistent, finishing with nothing worse than a bogey. He had birdies on holes seven and eight to start 2-under in his first five holes.
Nick Holder is in a tie with Hunter Mefford after the suspension. In round one, he a birdie on 18 to wrap up the back nine and another on hole five, his finishing hole. This paired with 11 pars. Later in the day, Holder had a tough start to round two, but he responded in a good way. After starting 5-over through seven holes, he eagled the 557-yard 13th, then birdied 15 and 18 to move back to 1-over.
Mefford was a big mover in round two, improving on his 77 opening round with a 2-over second with three to play. He moved up 15 spots on the leaderboard. He found a birdie putt to fall on the 540-yard 18th, which helped him go 1-under over his final six holes. In the afternoon round, Mefford mirrored what most of the other 'Dons did with a better back nine. He had birdies on 10 and 14 for a 1-under effort on the back.
Nick Bellush played as an individual, shooting 75 in round one.
As a team, the 'Dons shot 296 and midway through the second round, they are in a tie for eighth place with Oakland. The conclusion of round two and the third round of the World Golf Village Collegiate fires off on Tuesday morning (Feb. 20).
