FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball rallied to win a fifth set and their second straight match over McKendree on Saturday (Feb. 24) night and 3-2 (25-21, 26-24, 20-25, 19-25, 17-15).
Jon Diedrich and Mark Frazier each posted double doubles. Diedrich finished with 18 kills and 15 digs while Frazier had 16 kills and 10 digs.
The Mastodons trailed the Bearcats 13-11 in set five, but the 'Dons mounted a run sparked first by a service error by McKendree. Frazier had a kill, then Andrej Polomac and Bryce Walker combined for a block to set up set point. The Bearcats answered with a block and a kill surrounding an error to keep it 15-all, but the 'Dons got a huge block from Walker and Polomac again. Diedrich was as he was all afternoon, the go-to guy, and got the kill to finish off the match.
Down 19-18, the 'Dons captured seven of the final nine points to win the first set. Polomac, Diedrich, and Kaden Fosdick each contributed kills to the set-winning run.
The 'Dons held McKendree to just seven kills and a .000 hitting percentage in the second set, but the Bearcats kept the score close. With the set tied at 24, Frazier took the set with back-to-back kills to claim the set for Purdue Fort Wayne.
McKendree took the third and fourth sets hitting over .350 in both sets. The Bearcats were led by 16 kills from Kevin Schuele.
Wilmer Hernandez finished with 10 digs, moving his total for the weekend up to 19 for an average of 3.22 per set.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 9-7 and 3-4 in the MIVA. McKendree drops to 7-6 and 4-3 in the MIVA. The 'Dons travel to face Loyola Chicago on Thursday (Feb. 29) at 8 p.m.
