YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's track and field team finished in third place at the 2024 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships thanks to a team score of 126 points.
It is an improvement from last season's fourth place finish and total of 77 points.
Ali Sparks was named the meet's most outstanding performer for field events and Madison King won the same honor for running events. It is the first time a Mastodon has won either award.
Sparks won the shot put title (14.80 meters) thanks to a school record on Sunday. Her second place performance in the weight throw on Saturday helped her earn the outstanding field athlete award.
The 'Dons finished with 16 total points from the shot put as Lia Rivers (13.35 meters) was fourth and Nakia Harris-Campbell (12.67 meters) was eighth.
The 3000 meters was a race to remember for the 'Dons. While King cruised to a victory in the event (9:43.70) to take home the 3000 title a day after earning the 5000 title, it was the battle for second that drew the venue's attention. King's teammate Ava Genovese used a PR time of 9:51.24 to take second place.
The final race of the event was perhaps the most exciting of the two day meet. Purdue Fort Wayne's Jesseca Hudson-Turpin went from third to first in the final stretch of the 4x400 to give the 'Dons the title at the wire. She was joined by Kassie Jordan, Korynne Moga and Marissa Van De Weg to turn in the school-record time of 3:49.58.
Jai Reed took third in the 60 meters (7.58) and the 200 with a school record time of 24.62.
The 'Dons picked up 10 total points in the 60 hurdles and Jordan Yanders set a PR (8.57) for third and Hudson-Turpin took fifth (8.61).
Another Mastodon taking a top three spot was Riley Tate. She earned third in the mile (4:55.44) and earned a PR.
Louiza Kruiswijk followed her long jump school record on Saturday with a triple jump school record on Sunday (12.00 meters). She was fourth.
Jordan took eighth in the 400 meters (58.15).
Milwaukee won the team title. Youngstown State was second.
