DAYTON, Ohio – Purdue Fort Wayne defeated Wright State 79-77 on Wednesday (Feb. 28) in overtime at the Nutter Center in Horizon League play. Anthony Roberts blocked Trey Calvin's attempt to tie the game with five seconds left in the extra session to win the game for the Mastodons.
Jalen Jackson had a career-high 27 points in the contest, going 11-of-22 from the floor. However after Jackson it was very balanced scoring for the 'Dons. Eight Mastodons finished with five points or more. The Mastodon bench scored 25 points, the most in a game since Dec. 31 vs. Detroit Mercy.
Maximus Nelson led the bench effort with four 3-pointers for 12 points. Corey Hadnot II added eight points and Johnathan DeJurnett added five points and six rebounds in 12 minutes.
Eric Mulder had a career-high 13 rebounds to go with six points and a game-high three steals.
The 'Dons limited Wright State to 1-of-8 in the extra session. The big shot in OT came by Nelson when he made a 3-pointer to put the 'Dons ahead 79-77 with 2:09 left. Neither team scored the rest of the way, thanks partly to Roberts' block at the end.
The game featured 18 lead changes and 12 ties. The final tie of regulation came with 17 seconds left. The 'Dons were down by two when Bello drove to the hoop and was fouled. He made both free throws to knot it up. WSU had a chance at the buzzer but their shot to win was no good and the game went to overtime.
The largest lead for either team was six points.
Wright State was led by Tanner Holden's 19 points.
The 'Dons shot 41.1 percent from the floor and 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) from three. WSU finished at 44.9 percent and 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from beyond the arc.
The 'Dons improve to 19-11 (10-9 Horizon League). Wright State falls to 17-13 (12-7 Horizon League).
Other results around the Horizon League on Wednesday clinched a home game for the 'Dons on Tuesday, March 5 in the opening round of the 2023-24 Barbasol Horizon League Championship. It will be a 7 p.m. contest.
But Purdue Fort Wayne will be in action on Saturday (March 2) against Robert Morris to close out the regular season. It will be Senior Night at 7 p.m. with Roberts honored prior to the game.
