Mastodon Men's Volleyball Knocks Off No. 8 Penn State in Five Set Marathon

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team beat No. 8 Penn State in five sets (21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 18-25, 20-18) on Saturday night (Feb. 3) in front of a raucous crowd of 987.
Mark Frazier and Jon Diedrich combined for 45 of the Mastodons' 60 kills to lead Purdue Fort Wayne. Frazier's 24 kills were a career-high. They were also a combined .398 with Diedrich hitting .513 and Frazier .306. Bryce Walker added 10 kills on just 11 attempts.
It was 12-9 in the fifth set after a Mastodon timeout. The 'Dons went on a 5-1 run that featured kills by Frazier and Diedrich. This set up the first of six match points. There were seven kills between the two teams in the final nine points. It took a block from Walker and Andrej Polomac to give the Mastodons the victory.
Sets one and four went to Penn State as the Nittany Lions as they hit over .340 in both.
The 'Dons overcame Penn State hitting .453 in the second set by hitting .522 themselves. The Mastodons had six kills from Diedrich, four from Walker, two from Frazier and one from Axel Melendez Watts. There was just one attack error for Purdue Fort Wayne. Frazier had seven kills to lead Purdue Fort Wayne in the third set.
Penn State was led by 25 kills from Michal Kowal. PSU hit .343 as a team compared to the Mastodons' .344.
It was the first time since the 2021 season that two Mastodons had 20 or more kills. It is also the first top-10 win for the 'Dons since March of 2023.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 6-3 while Penn State falls to 7-3. The Mastodons will welcome No. 11 Loyola Chicago to the Gates Sports Center on Tuesday (Feb. 6) for their first MIVA contest of the season.
