CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 20 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up its first win in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action on Friday night (Feb. 9), defeating Queens 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 28-26).
For the sixth time this season, Purdue Fort Wayne hit over .300 as a team. The 'Dons hit .320 on Friday night, including a match-high .423 in the third set.
Queens took the opening set 25-22 by hitting .321. The Mastodons held the Royals under .200 the rest of the night.
The second set was full of mini-runs, but the Mastodons had the last one. After a 20-18 lead, the Mastodons won five of the last six under service from Jon Diedrich and Raul Papaleo Jr. This run included a block from Diedrich and Casey Lyons and a kill from Axel Melendez Watts.
After the 1-1 draw, Mark Frazier and Diedrich came alive, combining for 21 of their 33 kills after the halfway mark, while hitting a ridiculous .439.
Set three saw the 'Dons jump out to a 5-0 start with two of Diedrich's match-high four aces. The 'Dons never trailed the rest of the way and put the set away with a 7-1 run primarily behind Andrej Polomac's serving arm. Diedrich capped off the set with another ace.
It looked as though it was going to be the Mastodons' third five-setter in a week when Queens led 23-19, but the 'Dons went to their best player in crunch time. Diedrich had all six of his fourth-set kills after that 23-19 mark. Frazier put the match away with his 16th kill, which bumped him up to a .500 hitting percentage for the night.
Andrew Mayer had 10 digs for the second time in his freshman season. Jack Brinkman led Queens with 12 kills.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 7-4, 1-1 MIVA while Queens falls to 5-7, 1-2 MIVA. These two teams will meet again on Saturday (Feb. 10) at 3 p.m.
