Baseball Earns Second Win Over Missouri in Doubleheader Split

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team split a doubleheader at Missouri on Saturday (March 9). The Mastodons won game one 9-7 and dropped the nightcap 11-1. It was the Mastodons' second win over SEC foe Missouri in as many days.

Game One – Mastodons 9, Missouri 7
Similar to the Mastodons' win over Butler on Tuesday and Missouri on Friday, the 'Dons put a big crooked number on the board late in the game. In the opener on Saturday it was a five-run eighth inning. Both Nick Sutherlin and Justin Osterhouse hit a home run in the frame as the 'Dons took an 8-6 lead. Nate Simpson knocked in Purdue Fort Wayne's ninth run in the ninth inning on a single.

Kevin Fee earned his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Sutherlin and Osterhouse each had three hits in the game. Simpson and Grant Thoroman had two hits.

Nic Smith (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers. Carson Caudill (2-1) picked up the win in relief for the 'Dons.

Game Two – Missouri 11, Mastodons 1 – 8 innings
Trevor Austin had two home runs for the Tigers. His home run in the first put Missouri up 1-0. His home run in the third gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

The Mastodons' only run came in the sixth when Sutherlin came around to score after a one-out double.

Josh Kuhns (0-3) took the loss for the 'Dons. Jake Paymaster didn't give up an earned run in 2.1 innings of work. Carter Rustad (3-1) went 6.0 innings to get the victory for Missouri.

The 'Dons are now 6-10. Missouri is 7-8. The two teams will close out the four-game series on Sunday as the 'Dons look to win the series.
