BOARDMAN, Ohio - Natalie Papa and the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team are in range of individual and team titles at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational. The Mastodons are just five shots back of the host Youngstown State squad for the lead after 18 holes on Sunday (Sept. 22).
Papa fired a career-best round of 71, 1-under par. It was the first round under-par of her collegiate career. It took eight holes until her first bogey, but she had already recorded six pars and a birdie on hole two by then. To make up for the bogey on eight, she had a birdie on 10 in a five-hole bogey-free stretch. After moving to 1-over on 14, she closed her day with a birdie on 15, two pars, and another birdie on 18. Papa is in third place, just two shots back of Cleveland State's Kaitlin Kormuth.
Hunar Mittal is seeking the fifth top-10 finish of her career after an opening round of 73. The sophomore is in 11th place after finding birdies on holes two, six, nine and 11. She was 1-under on the front nine with three birdies to counter two bogeys.
Newcomer Lillian Gottman turned in a 76 and is in 17th place after 18 holes. The start of her day was the highlight, as Gottman started with a par and two birdies in the first three holes. After a rough patch over the next four holes, she settled into a stretch of 10 holes with just one worse than a par. She had a birdie on 11 for a 1-over back nine. Her 76 was also her best as a Mastodon.
Louise Ekesall and Olivia Jang both shot 77, tying for 25th with 18 to play. Ekesall had three birdies on the front nine for a 1-under front. She birdied four, six and nine with four pars. Jang had nothing worse than a bogey all day and had a stretch of seven pars.
The Mastodons shot 297 as a team, which ties the sixth-best 18-hole score in program history.
The final round of Youngstown State's tournament will commence on Monday (Sept. 23).
