Mastodon MVB Offense and Service Pressure Proves Too Much For Lees-McRae

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team's offense was clicking on Saturday (Jan. 25) on the Arnie Ball Court against Lees-McRae. The Mastodons won in three sets (25-17, 25-11, 25-16).
Purdue Fort Wayne concluded the match with 12 services aces, the most in a match since the 2022 season in a 3-2 victory over Head Coach Donny Gleason's Daemen squad. The 12 aces were also the third-most in a three-set match in program history and the ninth-most in a match of any length.
The Bobcats took early leads in all three sets (3-0, 1-0, 2-0), but the 'Dons battled back and lead for the rest of the match. After two successful challenges by Gleason, the Mastodons found themselves up 18-13 and finished the first set with 4-0 run.
The second set was all 'Dons, climbing up to a 10-point lead twice. To go along with ending the set on a 12-5 run, the Mastodons boasted a .786 hitting percentage and only one attack error through the set. Lees-McRae was held to a -.176 hitting percentage in the set. Purdue Fort Wayne tallied six aces in the second set alone, three from Axel Melendez Watts and two from Haven Wankerl.
After a closely contested start to the final set, the Mastodons pulled out a 11-5 run to complete the sweep over Lees-McRae. The 'Dons posted five aces in the third set, including the match-ending serve from Raul Papaleo Jr.
Melendez Watts ended with a match-high 14 kills on a .667 clip. The 'Dons boasted a .453 hitting percentage, while holding the Bobcats to .000.
Purdue Fort Wayne climbs up to 3-2, while Lees-McRae remains 0-5. The Mastodons will travel to Cambridge next week to take on (RV) Saint Francis (Pa.) (Jan. 31) and No. 20 Harvard (Feb. 1).
