DETROIT – Purdue Fort Wayne earned three crucial points in the Horizon League men's soccer standings on Friday (Oct. 31) evening with a 2-1 victory at Detroit Mercy. The win clinched a berth the 2025 Horizon League Championship for a third consecutive season.
The Mastodons will enter Tuesday's regular season finale vs. Northern Kentucky in second place in the league with 14 points. Purdue Fort Wayne is a point up on third-place Green Bay and Milwaukee who both have 13 points. Cleveland State has clinched the top seed with 18 points. A win on Tuesday will give the Mastodons the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals (Nov. 12) with a home game in Fort Wayne.
The 'Dons picked up the win on Friday night by rallying back from a 1-0 deficit after Detroit Mercy scored in the 14th minute. The Mastodons tied the contest right before the break thanks to a goal by Shane Anderson. He now has seven goals on the year. The score was assisted by Jonny Hernandez and Marco Valencia.
It would be the first of two goals which Valencia would earn a helper. He assisted on Iann Topete's goal in the 70th minute to put the 'Dons up 2-1. Topete finished from just a few yards out for his league-leading eighth goal of the season. It would stay that way the rest of the way.
Sep Habibi finished with two saves for the 'Dons including one in the 90th minute.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 7-2-5 (4-2-2 Horizon League). The Titans fall to 5-10-2 (2-5-1 Horizon League).
Tuesday's contest vs. NKU is set for a 2 p.m. start at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
