Olivia Jang in the Mix For Mastodon WG After 36 at Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Olivia Jang started the spring season for Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf on a positive note, firing off a season-best 72 in the second round of the Islander Classic on Monday (Feb. 17)
Jang sits in third place after the opening day of the event, finishing with a 75-72-147. In her first competitive round of the spring, she started with two bogeys but went 1-over the rest of the way. She bogeyed 12 and 15, but birdied hole three later on. She was bogey-free for the last nine holes of the round. Jang was even better in the afternoon, finding a birdie on her second hole to go under early. After three bogeys on the back nine, she birdied 18 and one back-to-back, then had another birdie on five. Jang is three shots out of the lead with 18 to play.
In 15th place after day one, Hunar Mittal shot 78-77-155. In the morning round, she turned in 12 pars and six bogeys. She had a stretch of three pars in a row on two occasions. In her second trip around the course, Mittal got birdies on holes seven, 12 and 18. She wrapped up the day going even in her last five holes.
Natalie Papa was the Mastodons' third-best player on Monday with a score of 81-76-157. In the morning Papa found nine pars and nothing worse than a bogey. She had three pars in a row to start and two at the end. In round two, she rattled off five pars in a row to get going. After a double-bogey on 13, Papa was 1-under in her next four holes thanks to a birdie on 16. She finished her day with three pars in a row to move into a tie for 18th.
Lillian Gottman and Lara Dommach tied for 33rd after two rounds, both shooting 82-80-162. Gottman got a birdie on hole three in round one, which came in a stretch of five bogey-free holes. Later in the day, she birdied hole six as a part of four more holes that were bogey-free. She birdied hole 15 to break up a skid of bogeys, helping her move up four spots on the leaderboard in round two.
Dommach 162 came without the help of any birdies, but she racked up 21 pars in the two rounds.
As a team, the Mastodons hold fifth place with two-round total of 621. Texas A&M Corpus Christi led the pack with a 596.
The final round of the Islander Classic will begin on Tuesday morning (Feb. 18) at 10:30 a.m. ET.
