Mastodon Softball Tops Coastal Carolina on Opening Day

CONWAY, S.C. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team started 2025 with a 1-1 opening day, picking up a win over Coastal Carolina after falling to Creighton in the season opener.
Game 1: Creighton 8, Purdue Fort Wayne 4
The Mastodons put up four runs in the fourth inning against Big East foe Creighton, but the Bluejays answered with four of their own in the bottom of the frame to take the win in game one of the season.
In the fourth, the 'Dons scored all four runs with two outs on the scoreboard. With Faith McClain on second and Gwen McMenemy on first, Grace Hollopeter ripped a double to left field. In the next AB, Bailey Manos doubled the opposite way to score Hollopeter. One spot down the lineup card, Aglaia Rudd singled down the left line to bring Manos home and even the score at 4-4, burning through Creighton's starter, Kenzie Schopfer.
Creighton's reliever Brooke Shifflett was tough for the 'Dons to figure out, as she went the final 3.1 innings without giving up a hit.
The Bluejays scored four runs in the second and four more in the fourth. After Alanah Jones threw the opening 4.1 innings, Mackenzie Arroyo tossed the last 1.2 and gave up just one hit.
Creighton started 1-0.
Hollopeter had two of the Mastodons' six hits and two of the four RBIs. Manos had two hits and an RBI.
Game 2: Purdue Fort Wayne 7, Coastal Carolina 5
Purdue Fort Wayne used a six-run fifth inning to take care of Coastal Carolina in the nightcap.
Trailing 3-1, McKenna Minton and Hollopeter were at the corners when Manos sent a deep shot over the center fielder's head, resulting in a stand-up triple. The next at bat, Rudd doubled to a nearby spot to score Manos and take a 4-3 lead. Kennedy Peckinpaugh singled to score Rudd, then freshman Skylar Smith pinch hit in the six-spot. She ripped a long ball over the center field wall for the first home run of her career.
Coastal Carolina answered with two runs in the sixth, but Purdue Fort Wayne's 7-3 lead an inning earlier was too much to surmount.
A pair of freshmen split time in the circle for the 'Dons. Aubrey Zachary went 5.2 innings to pick up the win. Arroyo threw 1.1 in relief and earned a save. Abby Henderson suffered the loss for Coastal.
Addison Zimpleman and Brooke Lickey had three hits each. Manos and Smith had two RBIs each.
Purdue Fort Wayne moved to 1-1 on opening day. Coastal Carolina fell to 1-1. The Mastodons will play Creighton and Coastal Carolina again tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
