INDIANAPOLIS - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team opened Horizon League play with a 6-4 victory over IU Indianapolis on Thursday (March 13).
The Mastodons racked up 10 hits in the contest. Bailey Manos, Grace Hollopeter and Addison Zimpleman each had two. Hollopeter and McKenna Minton each had two RBIs.
The 'Dons did all of their offensive damage in the first two innings, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. In the opening frame, Manos walked then worked her way around on a hit by pitch and fielder's choice, then scored on a bases loaded walk. Hollopeter scored behind her when Minton had a sacrifice fly to left.
In the second, Gwen McMenemy walked, then advanced on a single from Manos. Reigning Horizon League Player of the Week, Hollopeter, then doubled to score both runners and burn through a pitcher. Aglaia Rudd put the ball in play in the next at bat, which Hollopeter managed to score off due to a throwing error. Then, Minton doubled to bring Rudd home and give the 'Dons their sixth run of the game.
Alanah Jones was particularly effective from the circle early, striking out eight batters in the first three innings. She went for 6.0 to get the win despite giving up three runs late. She moved to 4-6. Gracie Brinkerhoff got her first save of the season in 1.0 inning of relief. Alexa Holman took the loss for IU Indy in just 1.2 innings.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 5-12 and 1-0 in the Horizon League. IU Indy falls to 6-16, 0-1. These two team will meet again on Friday (March 14) for two games starting at 1 p.m.
