Mastodons Top Quincy in Four

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team outlasted Quincy on Saturday (March 29) in a four-set bout (25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-22).
Quincy jumped out to an early set one lead, forcing a Mastodon timeout at 7-2 after a 6-0 run. The 'Dons came out of the timeout to post a 12-3 surge, claiming an 18-13 lead. Quincy AJ Goedheer's eight kills in the set couldn't bring the Hawks back before Purdue Fort Wayne took the first set 25-22.
Set two was neck-and-neck, neither team able to put together a scoring run larger than three consecutive points. The Mastodons held a 15-14 lead going into the media break. The 'Dons managed to ride a 6-2 surge into the end of the set, taking the second 25-23. Purdue Fort Wayne hit a match-high .357 hitting percentage in the set.
The third set proved to be even more competitive than the second. The Hawks held a 15-13 lead at the media break. The Mastodons took over the lead at 20-18 after a 4-0 run. Quincy managed to hold off the Purdue Fort Wayne push, countering with their own 4-0 scoring spree to take the third set 26-24.
Caleb Lipscomb gave the 'Dons a boost during an early fourth-set stretch, posting a kill, solo block and block assist during a 5-0 run. Quincy responded with their own 5-0 surge to own a 10-7 lead. The Mastodons slowly chipped away at the the Hawks lead, tying the set up at 21-21. Purdue Fort Wayne finished off the match on a 4-0 run to complete the victory.
Axel Melendez Watts led the match in kills, posting 16 kills, two aces and nine digs. Andrej Polomac assisted on 39 kills in the match, along with eight digs and two aces.
Purdue Fort Wayne jumps to 10-11, 3-9 in MIVA play. Quincy drops to 8-14, 2-10 in the MIVA. The 'Dons will host No. 15 Lewis on Thursday (April 3) and No. 14 Ball State on Saturday (April 5) for the Mastodons' senior night.
