COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Nine innings were not enough to determine a winner on Friday (March 7) in the series opener at Tennessee Tech for the Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team. The Mastodons scored a run in the top of the 10th before the Golden Eagles responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the 10th.
The Golden Eagles, fresh off a 16-run performance at Belmont on Wednesday, were kept off the board by the Mastodon pitching staff for nine innings. Starting pitcher Dillon Fischer was a big reason why. He threw 6.1 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Despite the game going to extras, it was played in less than three hours. It wasn't until the 10th when the 'Dons got on the board. Brooks Sailors singled and was pinch ran for by Ben Kasparie. A successful bunt put Sailors in scoring position. Drew Helton followed with his second hit of the day to score Kasparie. The 'Dons nearly had more on the board in the frame but stranded the bases loaded.
The bottom of the 10th saw Jorsixt Jimenez open the the inning with a single. Two batters later and the game was tied. Jackson Rooker earned the RBI for the game-winning run with two outs in the 10th to make the final 2-1.
Sean Kasper (0-1) took the loss. Juan Vargas (2-0) earned the win in relief.
Tennessee Tech moves to 11-4 with the win. The 'Dons fall to 1-11 and are back in action on Saturday against the Golden Eagles.
