
Cleveland State Escapes Mastodon Softball 5-4

After CSU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Purdue Fort Wayne chipped away at it and tied it in the second frame. In the bottom of the first, Grace Hollopeter singled up the middle to bring Bailey Manos home. The 'Dons had three singles in a row to get their first run of the day. An inning later, three more singles in a row from Gwen McMenemy, Manos and Tori Countryman scored two runs.Â
Purdue Fort Wayne took its only lead of the day in the fourth. McMenemy doubled then worked around to third after another single from Manos. Countryman sent McMenemy home with a sac fly to center.
CSU tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single, then took the lead on the solo home run in the seventh.
Manos finished 3-for-4. Countryman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. The Mastodons finished with nine hits.
Alanah Jones was relatively effective in the circle, allowing just two earned runs and striking out six batters. Reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Year Melissa Holzopfel picked up the win with 15 strikeouts.
Cleveland State improved to 19-14 and 14-2 in Horizon League play. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 12-19, 8-5. These two teams will meet again on Wednesday (April 16) for a doubleheader at noon.
