Two Second Half Goals Lift ‘Dons to Draw at DePaul

CHICAGO – Purdue Fort Wayne earned a 3-3 draw at DePaul on Thursday (Aug. 21) in the 2025 regular season opener for the Mastodons.
The 'Dons were down 3-1 after penalty kick goals by DePaul in the 48th and 59th minutes. But then Iann Topete made his Mastodon debut one to remember. He scored in the 65th minute, assisted by Shane Anderson, to get the Mastodons within one. 12 minutes later it was Topete again. This time on a header into the top right corner of the goal. He was setup on a nice pass by Ameer Shetiah.
The 'Dons had the majority of chances in the final 15 minutes, but couldn't score the game-winner. This included a pass by Anderson from the far right that went through the goal mouth with about 15 seconds on the clock but ultimately didn't find the foot of a Mastodon.
Topete, a transfer from Grand Canyon, wasn't the only one playing his first Mastodon game to make an impact. Redshirt freshman Karsten Ternes scored in the 12th minute, assisted by Anderson, to put the Mastodons up early in the contest.
Christian Baumgartner tied the game with a goal in the 23rd minute for DePaul. Luca Iaccino had the first penalty kick goal for DePaul and Noeh Hernandez scored the second.
The 'Dons held a 18-14 edge in shots.
Both clubs are 0-0-1. The Mastodons will stay in Chicago and play at Loyola on Sunday.
