'Dons Drop Match at Valpo

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team came up short in a 3-0 contest against Valparaiso on Sunday (Aug. 24).
Valparaiso opened the match by applying pressure early, earning two corner kicks and scoring on the second in the ninth minute of the contest. The Beacons scored again in the 13th minute and threatened a third goal minutes after, but Jordan Imes managed to tip the ball over the goal.
The Mastodons took on the offensive halfway through the first, earning a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Scarlett Webster fired a high arcing shot that nearly fell into the net.
Valpo returned the favor with their fourth shot on goal in the half, saved by Imes in the 27th.
The 'Dons had their best chance of the first half in the 35th minute when Alexis Purdy took a 30 foot shot on goal that the keeper managed to tip over the net, earning a Purdue Fort Wayne corner. Bella Masse took the second Mastodon shot on goal following the corner, but the keeper managed to make the save.
Valparaiso continued the pressure in the second half, taking two shots on goal and another shot blocked in the first 15 minutes.
The momentum swing the Mastodons' way after the 60 minute mark. Chloe Mariotti fired off a free kick that found the head of Daisy Moody, the ball rolled just right of the goal. The sequence was followed by shots on goal from both Kailey Hansen and Cyann Retzloff.
The Beacons took off on another offensive stretch, but keeper Madison Ott managed to turn away the first three attempts. Valparaiso managed to find the net for a third time in the 90th minute.
The Mastodons finished with 10 shots, four on goal, and seven corners in the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-2-1 and Valparaiso moves to 1-1-1. The Mastodons will finish their three-match road stretch on Thursday (Aug. 28) at Kentucky.
