Men’s Soccer Stays Undefeated; Tops Oakland 3-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Iann Topete scored twice in Purdue Fort Wayne's 3-1 men's soccer victory over Oakland on Saturday (Sept. 13) in Horizon League action.
It is the Mastodons' second win over Oakland since 1982, and their first since 2012. The Mastodons improve to 3-0-3 (1-0-0 Horizon League) this season with the win. For the first time in program history, the Mastodons are undefeated through the first six games of the season.
The win came over an Oakland team (0-4-3, 0-1-0 Horizon League) that entered the game without a win, but had a pair of ties against top 25 competition.
If a quick start was a key to the contest, head coach Stephen Gorton's squad got just that. Karsten Ternes delivered a long pass from behind midfield to a racing Anderson. The senior corralled the ball and beat Oakland keeper Cole Thompson from just a few yards out.
Anderson nearly had another tally later in the first half, but saw a shot rattle off the crossbar.
The 'Dons did find the back of the net again in the first half. Topete scored on a goal assisted by Marcos Soria and Christian Agyekum in the 36th minute. Soria's pass came from just a few yards from the corner flag, setting up Topete.
Soria had another key play just a minute later when he slid and made a save on an Oakland shot in front of the Mastodon goal.
Oakland got within a goal early in the second half when Malik Sylvester scored off a free kick, assisted by Marco Mazzei.
Topete and the 'Dons would not be denied on Saturday afternoon. Topete scored his league-leading fifth goal of the season off passes from Soria and Anderson in the 69th minute.
The teams finished even in shots (9) and corner kicks (4).
The 'Dons play their first road league game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Wright State.
