BOARDMAN, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team took second at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational on Monday (Sept. 22) with a two-day total of 610.
The Mastodons' 610 was only bested by the host Youngstown State Penguins' 574.
Olivia Jang was the Mastodons' best finisher, taking fifth with a 77-72-149. This is her second top-five finish in as many events this season. Jang's 72 on Monday is a top-10 round in program history. After a bogey to start the day, she was 1-under the rest of the way. She birdied 18 to move back to even before two more pars. A double-bogey on three prefaced three pars and an eagle on seven to move back to even for the day. She reached the 469-yard par-5's green in two from 185 yards out and sank the nine-foot putt for the eagle. Three more pars came before a bogey on 11, but Jang birdied 13 and parred her final two for her 72.
Emily Gottman shot 80-74-154 with nothing worse than a bogey in round two. After two bogeys in her first six holes, she went 2-under over her next four, birdieing seven and nine. She parred three more over the next five before a birdie on 15, the 452-yard par-5. Her 74 was the best of her young career, putting her in a tie for 12th, also her best finish.
Emily's older sister, Lillian Gottman shot 76-79-155 for 15th place. Like her sister, Lillian had nothing worse than a bogey in round two. She had six pars on the front nine and a birdie on 10 to start her final five-hole stretch.
Louise Ekesall matched her opening round of 78 with another on Monday. The sophomore from Sweden birdied her second hole of the day, the 475-yard 18th, before rattling off 11 pars over her next 14 holes. Ekesall finished in a tie for 16th, one shot back of Gottman.
Hunar Mittal had her 75 taken in round two, starting her day on a positive note with a birdie on one. After a 1-over front nine, she was 2-over on the back, even over the last seven. She birdied hole 13 before a bogey on 14, then parred the last four. Her two-day total of 159 was good for 22nd place.
Lara Dommach played as an individual, shooting 154 for 12th place.
The Mastodons are back in action on Sunday (Sept. 28) at Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Classic.
