No. 9 Ball State Bests No. 19 Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball program lost in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-23) to No. 9 Ball State on Saturday night (March 21) on the Arnie Ball Court.
The Cardinals pulled away early in the first set, claiming an 11-6 lead following a 6-1 run. Ball State held the lead through the set and rattled off four unanswered points to go up 24-17. The Mastodons replied back with four straight of their own, powered by a kill and ace from Logan Muir. The Cardinals finished off the set at 25-21, holding the 'Dons to a .000 hitting percentage in the frame.
The number nine team in the nation flexed their offensive power in the second set, boasting a .474 clip. Ball State opened up on a 3-0 run and followed it up with a 6-2 scoring spree shortly after, owning a 14-9 lead. The Cardinals cruised through the rest of the set for a 25-17 finish.
Purdue Fort Wayne refused to back down going into the final frame, owning a 16-14 lead after scoring four straight points. The run was carried by two kills from Muir, one from Kaden Fosdick and the two players combining for a block. Ball State managed to take over the lead with a 6-2 stretch. Both sides traded off points until the Cardinals took the final set 25-23.
Muir led the 'Dons with 14 kills and two service aces. Hunter Hopkins finished with 28 assists and seven digs in the match.
No. 19 Purdue Fort Wayne drops to 9-8 on the year, 4-6 in MIVA play. No. 9 Ball State moves to 18-3 for the season, 9-2 in MIVA play to lead the association. The 'Dons hit the road for a two week stretch, beginning with trips to No. 12 McKendree (March 26) and No. 11 Lindenwood (March 28).
