HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Natalie Papa of the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team used a 78 in round two of the Horizon League Golf Championship on Sunday (April 26) to move into eighth place.
As a team, the Mastodons are still within reach of a trophy. The 'Dons are in fourth place, 16 shots off Oakland's lead, seven back of Youngstown State for second and one behind Northern Kentucky
Papa was very steady in round two, turning in a scorecard with nothing worse than a bogey. After starting on 10, she bogeyed 11, but then strung together seven pars in a row. Her day was highlighted by a birdie on hole nine, her finishing hole. It was only playing at 330 yards, so she could attack the pin after her tee shot.
Lillian Gottman shot 82 on Sunday, finding 10 pars out on the course. She parred her first three and had a stretch of four in a row in the toughest stretch on the front nine. Gottman is in 12th place.
Emily Gottman was the Mastodons' best in round two, turning in a 78, three shots better than her opening round. Gottman tore up the last six holes of the back nine, going 3-under from 13-17. She birdied holes 14, 16 and 17. She was the only Mastodon to birdie each of those holes. After making the turn, she added a birdie on hole one, a reachable par-5. Her 159 is good for 15th place with 18 to play.
Hunar Mittal also improved on day two, shooting 80. After a double-bogey on 10 to start the day, she was 1-under over the next six holes. She birdied hole 13, overcoming a huge hill with a great second shot to putt for birdie. On the front, she birdied hole six, the second-toughest on the side. She is in 19th place.
Louise Ekesall rounded out the lineup with an 83 for 25th place. She recorded 11 pars in her second round, including five in a row on the back nine.
The last round of the Horizon League Championship will begin on Monday morning with tee times for the 'Dons starting at 8:20 a.m.
