'Dons Top Vikings in Five Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team outlasted the visiting Cleveland State Vikings on Friday night (Sept. 25), picking up a 3-2 win (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 15-9) to open Horizon League play.
The Mastodons shut down Cleveland State in the fifth set, holding the Vikings to a paltry -.100 hitting clip in the final frame. Meanwhile, the 'Dons hit .200, more than enough to come away with the win. The 'Dons never trailed in set five. They led 11-5 when a CSU timeout preceded a Viking hitting error. Despite that, the Vikings showed life, going on a 4-0 run to bring it back within two. Steve Florio trusted his players, not calling a timeout, and the 'Dons went to Riley Rosneck for a kill. This sparked a 4-0 run over the final four points to win the match.
The Mastodons were at their best in the third set, when they hit a scorching .412. That came after hitting .310 in the second. Both the second and third sets were tallied to the home team.
Trinity Rye was on fire for the Mastodons all night. She finished with 19 kills on a .289 hitting percentage. She had five kills in the second and six in the third. While Rye was the straw that the stirred the Mastodons proverbial offensive drink, Becky Barrett kept the Mastodons' alive with a match-high 23 digs.
Haiden Means and Lili Smith split the setting duties, dishing out 26 and 17 assists, respectively. They led the 'Dons to a .246 hitting clip. Avery Parris came in clutch off the bench with nine important kills on a .471 hitting percentage.
The Mastodons moved to 1-0 in Horizon League play and 7-7 overall. Cleveland State fell to 3-9, 0-1.
The 'Dons and Vikes will meet again on the Arnie Ball Court tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 26) at 2 p.m.
